Giving your kitchen a fresh coat of paint is one of the quickest ways to refresh the space and have it feeling like new. If you’re new to the process it may seem overwhelming at first, but don’t worry! We’ve collected a few tips to keep in mind while prepping for your kitchen makeover:

Tip #1: Light affects color

Remember that the light in your kitchen changes as the day goes by! Morning light will look different from direct afternoon sunlight and low evening light, making your colors look slightly different. It’s important to understand how much light your kitchen gets and how that will affect your final look so that you’re not caught off-guard after painting the room.

Tip #2: Pick your paint color at home

Whatever you do, don’t choose a paint color while at the store! Bring home small paint samples that you can apply directly to your walls, and swatch them next to your cabinets, appliances, furniture, and windows to make sure the color goes with your decor. This will also allow you to observe the effects of light during the day on the color you’ve chosen.

Tip #3: Experiment with color

Warm colors are a popular choice for kitchens– studies have shown that our appetites increase when we see red or orange colors, and warm tones in general are cheerful, lively, and inviting. However, this doesn’t mean you have to ignore blues and greens. Cool tones have been shown to have a calming effect, and can be paired with warm neutrals like gray or orange for a sophisticated look. You’ll be surprised how mixing up your palette can create a kitchen straight out of a magazine!

Tip #4: Don’t forget the finish

Make sure you read the labels on all of your paint cans! Your paint’s finish can greatly affect how it looks on your walls. A good rule of thumb to follow is that the more matte the finish, the harder it is to clean. If you’re looking for something that’s easy to clean and that reflects light beautifully, opt for either a satin or semi-gloss finish.
